Farfalle for my friend…

September 28th, 2008

So, here I am in a new city…living alone…and it is hard sometimes!  I miss having a roommate to hang out with and cook for…sure, I have my friends but there is something to be said for the impromptu dinner date with L.   Who is L you might ask? Well, L is my roommate, best friend, and official taste tester. We were thrown together freshman year of college as random roommates and just clicked. Over the years, we have shared a lot and she has helped me through many issues with school, boys and life. After college, she moved to DC, where I soon followed. That year, we did not live together but she started dating my neighbor so I still saw her quite frequently. She was the one I first tried my chocolate souffles on…as we sat there giggling with a bottle of champagne. Last year, we lived together again…as I was moving and everything, I ignored the fact that this was the end of us as roommates. We still talk weekly but I miss her. I was thinking about her today when I made this pasta.  She loves farfalle pasta!  The recipe is adapted from the September issue of Saveur, which came unexpectedly in the mail yesterday. If they want to send me a free magazine, I’ll take it!

Pasta with Tuna

2. Heat the olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Cook the garlic and red crushed peppers until the garlic is tender.
3. Heat the tuna until warmed through.
4. Add reserved pasta water and toss in the pasta.
5. Cook until the pasta sauce thickens.
6. Stir in the chives and sprinkle with the parmesan.

P.S.  A friend sent me links to this guy on youtube who gets really creative with vegetables.  It is worth checking out!

Fudgy Brownies and Feisty Women…

September 20th, 2008

The other day, J asked me, “What is the greatest heroine in American literature?”   Well, I thought about it but nothing immediately came to mind.  There is Hester Prynne in the Scarlet Letter but why can’t I think of a great heroine?  J suggested Nancy Drew and Scarlett O’Hara.  The question got me thinking about what constituted a heroine and I brought it up with some of my friends.  We all love reading so I was sure we could brainstorm some great characters.  Again, we struggled…adding only Jo Marsh from Little Women to the list.  Well, that gives us a few.  Now, what do these women have in common?  They are all strong, intelligent, independent and feisty women.  As a modern woman, those seem like admirable characteristics.  Unfortunately, there seems to be few examples in literature.  Why is that?  Do you have any additions?

In honor of feisty and chocolate loving women everywhere, I tried out Katharine Hepburn’s brownie recipe.  She definitely fits into the feisty women category.  The brownies were amazing!  I took them to class so that I did not eat the entire pan myself.  I did change the recipe a little bit because it calls for unsweetened chocolate and I only had bittersweet.  Overall, they were great!

Katharine Hepburn’s Brownies
(adapted from here)
1 stick of butter
3/4 cup of bittersweet chocolate chips
3/4 cup sugar
2 eggs
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 cup flour
1/4 teaspoon salt

1. Melt together butter and chocolate and take the saucepan off the heat.
2. Stir in sugar, eggs and vanilla, and beat the mixture well.
3. Stir in flour and salt.
4. Bake the brownies in a buttered and floured 8-inch-square pan (I use a pie pan) at 325°F for about 30 minutes.

Welcome to the new Just Get Floury!!!

September 14th, 2008

Welcome to my new blog!!! As if moving to Chicago and starting law school was not enough, I decided to move my blog on over to www.justgetfloury.com… The past couple weeks have been very busy with starting school. I feel like all I ever do is read cases and then more cases. But I love it!!! Unfortunately, I never seem have time to cook much…

Tonight, however, I made some yummy pasta for dinner!  I used Smitten Kitchen’s recipe for slow roasted tomatoes. They are so good…just throw over some pasta, sprinkle with cheese and you have a really great dinner!
